Our relief style is the minimalist one. Roads, rivers and coastlines are laser cut and raised off the board, with the terrain engraved in.
It suits cities, towns, islands and large areas like whole states or countries. Past custom pieces include New York, Hong Kong and Russell Island in Queensland.
Choose a size and place your order, and we will draft the design with you by email before anything is cut. Not sure which style suits your place? Take the style survey for a free recommendation within 24 hours.
Each map is laser cut from layers of basswood, finished by hand and set in an oak frame (natural, brown or black) with a wire on the back, so it arrives ready to hang.
Drafting
About 2 weeks. We email you drafts. Most maps are approved by the third draft, and we keep going until you're happy.
Physical fabrication
About 1 week once you approve the design.
Shipping
DHL Express, included with every order.
USA & AU: 2 to 4 business days
NZ, CA, EU & other countries: 2 to 6 business days
Tracking is emailed to you, and we cover all tariffs and import duties. No surprise bills.
All maps are framed and ready to hang.
Our frames are made from oak. Choose from one of the three finishes:
Natural - no staining, a blonde / sandy tone
Brown - a light brown stain
Black - a rich black stain
All frames are finished with lacquer, this adds durability and highlights the grain.
30-day satisfaction guarantee
If you or the recipient don't love the map, return it within 30 days of delivery for a full refund. Return postage is paid by you.
If it arrives damaged, email photos to tim@originmaps.com within 7 days and we'll replace it, cover a local reframe or refund you.
How does ordering a custom map work?
Pick a size and place your order. We then email you to go over the location and style, and send digital drafts. Most maps are approved by the third draft, and we keep going until you're happy. Nothing is cut until you approve the design.
Can I ask questions before I pay?
Yes. Take the style survey and we'll email you a style recommendation within 24 hours, or get in touch.
What do you need from me?
The location - an address, a dropped pin or a screenshot is fine. For farms a property map or boundary helps, but it isn't essential. We can source topographic and street data for anywhere in the world.
How long does it take?
About 2 weeks of drafting with you, then about 1 week of physical fabrication. Then we ship it with DHL Express: 2 to 4 business days to the US and Australia, 2 to 6 to NZ, Canada, Europe and other countries.
What is it made from?
The map is cut from layers of basswood and finished by hand. It comes set in an oak frame (natural, brown or black) with a wire on the back, ready to hang.
Can it be a surprise gift?
Yes. We work through the design with you by email, so the person you're giving it to never needs to know.
Does it have glass?
No. The map is left open so you can see the depth of the layers.

I purchased this map as a gift for my dad, who has advanced Alzheimer's. He took one look at the map and said: Oh! This is home and it's beautiful! I honestly couldn't ask for more.

This was by far the easiest gift to purchase Tim was so good about walking me through the process to make sure this gift was exactly what I was wanting for my son. I was very impressed and it Abe out awesome.
Can't go wrong with one of these as a gift. Beautifully crafted, professionally framed, very light to carry but still feels sturdy. It's clearly been made with care and attention to detail. Tim is very responsive and will get you get to sign off on the scale and features so you get exactly what you want.
I purchased a custom piece for my husband's birthday, Tim was a pleasure to correspond with, very responsive and assisted me (a map illiterate person) with coming up with a good design. I was really happy with the outcome and as a bonus, it arrived in time for fathers day too!
Really awesome, Really Fast, Great Product
Tim was fantastic with communication, so please with our map, can’t wait to give it to the bride and groom!
Thanks again for the awesome service
Couldn't recommend Tim anymore. I requested a custom map which I wanted in short notice and he was so accomadating getting it to me even earlier than I hoped. He made sure each detail was discussed and agreed on, and helped when I couldn't decide on things. The map turned out even better than expected and is admired by anyone who has seen it.
