Our topographic style is our signature piece. Every contour, cliff and valley of your place is carved in layers, so you can see and feel the shape of the land.
It suits farms, rural land, national parks and mountain country, and works well for whole states and countries too.
Choose a size and place your order, and we will draft the design with you by email before anything is cut. Not sure which style suits your place? Take the style survey for a free recommendation within 24 hours.
Each map is laser cut from layers of basswood, finished by hand and set in an oak frame (natural, brown or black) with a wire on the back, so it arrives ready to hang.
Drafting
About 2 weeks. We email you drafts. Most maps are approved by the third draft, and we keep going until you're happy.
Physical fabrication
About 1 week once you approve the design.
Shipping
DHL Express, included with every order.
USA & AU: 2 to 4 business days
NZ, CA, EU & other countries: 2 to 6 business days
Tracking is emailed to you, and we cover all tariffs and import duties. No surprise bills.
All maps are framed and ready to hang.
Our frames are made from oak. Choose from one of the three finishes:
Natural - no staining, a blonde / sandy tone
Brown - a light brown stain
Black - a rich black stain
All frames are finished with lacquer, this adds durability and highlights the grain.
30-day satisfaction guarantee
If you or the recipient don't love the map, return it within 30 days of delivery for a full refund. Return postage is paid by you.
If it arrives damaged, email photos to tim@originmaps.com within 7 days and we'll replace it, cover a local reframe or refund you.
How does ordering a custom map work?
Pick a size and place your order. We then email you to go over the location and style, and send digital drafts. Most maps are approved by the third draft, and we keep going until you're happy. Nothing is cut until you approve the design.
Can I ask questions before I pay?
Yes. Take the style survey and we'll email you a style recommendation within 24 hours, or get in touch.
What do you need from me?
The location - an address, a dropped pin or a screenshot is fine. For farms a property map or boundary helps, but it isn't essential. We can source topographic and street data for anywhere in the world.
How long does it take?
About 2 weeks of drafting with you, then about 1 week of physical fabrication. Then we ship it with DHL Express: 2 to 4 business days to the US and Australia, 2 to 6 to NZ, Canada, Europe and other countries.
What is it made from?
The map is cut from layers of basswood and finished by hand. It comes set in an oak frame (natural, brown or black) with a wire on the back, ready to hang.
Can it be a surprise gift?
Yes. We work through the design with you by email, so the person you're giving it to never needs to know.
Does it have glass?
No. The map is left open so you can see the depth of the layers.
I ordered a custom topographic map of a mountain range/ski slope as a wedding gift for a couple. While I had some back and forth with Tim on the design and rendering, I was shocked to receive an email notification that the product had been shipped without Tim sharing a photo of the final product. I was disappointed with the level of detail compared to his previous work, it turned out far more basic than I was expecting. I would have liked better communication in order to consult on this very special custom piece of art, and certainly would have liked to approve the final product before shiping especially since it was a gift.
Great quality, service, and exactly as advertised!
Seller was amazing! Reached out to him right before Christmas for a custom piece to be shipped to America. Despite the lack of time, he was able to make it happen! My dad loved this beautiful gift! Seller was super thoughtful in which details to add and was super quick to make any edits or changes to drafts as we went. My dad (who is into maps) also noted the accuracy and detail of the map and said “this must have taken someone a long time to make!” Super happy with my purchase and so thankful to the seller for working with me to get it here in time for Christmas morning!
Tim was able to customize a 3-D map of our home state for my husband’s birthday present - the process was simple and the map is accurate and beautiful. He loves it! It’s become an interactive conversation piece in our living room
Love it - so personalised to us! Now we can compare what we see out the window 👌
Excellent product. Great communication with Tim. Delivery was fast. I would absolutely recommend this as a special one of a kind gift. Thanks Tim
Highly recommended!!!
I purchased a customised map as a gift and couldn’t be happier with it! The detail in the map was brilliant. My partner loved the gift. We have put it up on the wall and everyone who comes to visit has commented on how detailed and original it is.
Tim was so helpful and easy to chat with. He went above and beyond to produce an outstanding piece, researching the area I wanted to add little extra details.
Thank you Tim!
Map came quick and it is such a cool piece!
Such a beautifully crafted concept. Can not recommend highly enough. We are becoming repeat customers and I’m sure will be back again as these make for very special gifts.
Not only the end result but also the process of working with Tim has been outstanding. He asked a few questions about the details of how I want the map to look like and then it was shipped on time, and it looked absolutely great on arrival. Would absolutely recommend working with him again.
Great attention to detail. Easy to work with. Customisation was on point. Everyone loved it. Just wished it was for me and not someone else. 😊
Had a great experience getting a custom map commissioned. Tim was super helpful with every step providing mock ups for review before shipping the map and was quick to respond to all communication.
Made for the perfect gift, highly recommend.

I reached out to Tim for a custom topographic and bathymetric map of Wales for a gift for my partner's 40th birthday and the process to the finished product was wonderful! Tim listened to my wants, kept me updated on the design and process, ensured I was happy with the draft and created something incredibly beautiful! The piece arrived well before required. Pictures simply do not do this piece justice. My partner absolutely loves his map of Wales - thank you so very much to Tim!
I am very happy with my purchase! It arrived perfectly and it looks amazing and good quality. Communication with seller was very good. I definitely recommend!
This map was the perfect wedding gift for my friends who got married in Utah! It came out beautifully and the couple loved it and couldn’t get over how unique it was. Seller was very helpful along the way, curating the perfect map to work from. Highly recommend purchasing and will likely purchase again in the future!!
Amazing quality.
Absolutely perfect.
Such an amazing gift for someone who is difficult to buy for.
The maps met all our expectations and look great in the home
Totally exceeded my expectations! The perfect birthday gift for my boyfriend, who just purchased a plot in Driggs, Idaho. It comes nicely framed, too. Highly recommend this!
I ordered a 3D wooden topographical map of Minnesota for my boyfriend and it exceeded my expectations. I was a little wary about the international shipping but the map was not damaged in any way when it arrived.
Thank you so much!!!
The quality of the finished piece was excellent as was working with Tim. I love this topographic representation of our slice of heaven.
It is amazing. Wonderful and literally eye satisfying . Many thanks Tim

I could not be happier with the beautiful custom map! From start to finish a great experience.
Bought this as a gift for a friend and it was one of the best online experiences I have had. Tim was incredibly helpful in making sure everything was perfect, very collaborative and responsive until everything was just right. The entire process was super fast. And the map itself is amazing, such a cool piece of art. My friend is absolutely in love with it, probably need to get one for myself now :)
The map we wanted was custom and required us to provide Tim with the necessary survey data - Tim was so patient and helpful during this process! The end result was awesome, the team and gift recipient loved it!
Wow. The map is absolutely beautiful. Tim was so helpful and made suggestions as to what would look best so I got an amazing piece of artwork. He was professional, friendly and accommodating and really knew his stuff. He made me a true work of art and I love it - I’m sure my husband will too when he gets it on his birthday. I highly recommend Tim and, when I need another collectable, I’ll be back. Thanks so much Tim!
